REACH INITIATIVE

Masco Corporation Foundation has awarded one-time “bridge” grants to a variety of Detroit area arts and cultural organizations.  In response to the challenging economic times in which the Michigan arts community finds itself currently, the Foundation’s REACH program—an initiative to Revitalize and Enhance the community through Arts, Culture and Housing—has made these one-time grants.  Totaling nearly one-half million dollars, the “bridge” grants supplement operational budgets and community outreach efforts benefiting youth, with many of them offering a challenge match with the potential for the organization to double the size of its original gift.

Though the grants are primarily unrestricted in nature, some are restricted to provide transportation and ticket subsidies to at-risk and under-funded area school and children’s programs during this school year.

“Michigan’s economic difficulties have resulted in fundraising challenges for the not-for-profit community, and particularly for Michigan’s arts community.  We hope that our effort to provide additional operating support to Southeast Michigan’s essential cultural institutions will encourage other corporations, foundations and individuals around the State to join us,” stated Lillian Bauder, Chair and President of MASCO’s Foundation.

As an additional component of its REACH initiative, the Foundation will introduce a competitive grants program early next year to promote Detroit-area, low-income housing.

Recipients of MASCO’s REACH grants include: Detroit Historical Museum, Detroit Public Television, Detroit Science Center, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Zoo, Michigan Opera Theatre, Music Hall, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, College for Creative Studies’ outreach program, Cranbrook Art Museum, Cranbrook Institute of Science, Plowshares Theatre Company, The Detroit Institute of Arts, The Henry Ford, Walk & Squawk Performance Project, Casa de Unidad Cultural Arts Center, Detroit Repertory Theatre, Matrix Theatre Company and YMCA Metro Detroit’s Arts & Humanities program.
